Covid-19: Home Learning with Discovery Diaries

Parents, carers and teachers: we see you. This is a challenging time that requires us to balance so many conflicting pressures. Here at Discovery Diaries HQ we are running a business with a very busy two year old at home. It’s not easy but we have gotten loads of inspiration from other parents and teachers who are rising up creatively and sharing, so generously, their ideas and resources. So, it’s our turn to give back. We have more than 60 fun, creative activities on this website that anyone can use free of charge. Below is a quick guide to get you started.

Happy home learning!

What are the Discovery Diaries?

Discovery Diaries are creative, arts-based primary STEM programmes themed around real-life space projects. There are three programmes, each with 20+ cross-curricular activities that are fully supported by teaching resources and multimedia. The activities are fun, flexible and easy for parents to use.

Can parents and carers use them?

Absolutely, we welcome parents and carers to the Discovery Diaries community! Just register for FREE, then you can download EVERYTHING: the activities as PDFs, teaching notes with all the science behind the activities plus suggestions for how to run activities around them, videos, powerpoint presentations and more. Resources are available in English and Welsh.

Why do I have to register?

Our resources are totally free to use online, without obligation, thanks to funding from the UK Space Agency, the Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Welsh Government. By registering you help us to learn a little about who our resources are reaching so we can set ourselves goals, apply for more funding, and keep our resources free for as long as possible.

How do I find activities?

Click on Resources in the top navigation, then you can either select a book and follow its narrative, chapter by chapter. Or you can pick and mix activities from all three programmes by selecting subject area, learning methodology or key stage. If you’re unsure where to start, check out our Top 10 Activities for Home Learning.

How to bookmark activities

To save your favourites, click on the little yellow star icon on the activity’s listing:

You can then click on ‘Favourites’ at any time and you’ll find your saved activities there.

Share your work with us!

Here at Discovery Diaries HQ, nothing thrills us more than seeing the amazing work our future STEM experts have been doing. Share completed activities by using #discoverydiaries on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And don’t forget to follow @curvedhousekids, so you can keep up to date with Discovery Diaries news.

How to support us

We don’t take donations at the moment, but you can support us by sharing the website with others. You can also purchase books in the Bookshop if you want some extra motivation for your kids. Despite the Corona lockdown, books still seem to be getting from our HQ in Berlin to UK families in about 7-10 working days.

So, good luck with your missions! Feel free to contact us if you have any questions: info@curvedhousekids.com or via Twitter or Facebook.
